Taking decent pictures with your iPhone can sometimes pose a difficult task. Many modern iPhones have capabilities similar to that of the modern DSLR. Knowing how to use your iPhone properly is required for fully taking advantage of your iPhone’s impressive capabilities. Throughout this post, we will be discussing a couple techniques.
Rule of Thirds
The first step in taking a good photo with your iPhone is learning how to frame your subject. Take a look at the photos below.
Which one seems to have a greater visual appeal? The second photo is using a technique called “the rule of thirds.” This technique is applicable across all platforms of photography and is perhaps the most well known. You can use the rule of thirds by drawing four imaginary lines on a photo as seen below.
Place your subject in one of the four corners. However, if your subject is clearly moving in one direction, make sure you leave empty space in the photo in front of the direction in which your subject is moving.
The Rule of Simplicity
Another vital rule to take into account is the Rule of Simplicity. Many pictures fail to visually appeal to their viewers solely because of the fact that their background is too complicated. A busy background can draw away from the intended subject of the image and blur the main focus. Take a look at the two photos below.
The first picture’s background is distracting. The viewer’s eyes will be drawn to the yard and basketball hoop in the back and away from the subject in the front. The second picture, however, brings more attention to the subject. A simple rainbow theme was applied to the photo which made the background less distracting.
Simplicity can be achieved by simply choosing one color or simple color theme and attempting to find a wall or background with the color or theme that you chose. This will bring out the detail in the subject while simultaneously making the color pop.
Next time you take a photo with your iPhone, experiment with these techniques. It is definitely possible to take an extraordinary picture with your iPhone, and you just need to learn how to use your iPhone’s capabilities to their full potential to achieve this picture.
